美国某海军陆战队的直升机频频出事，少校凯利负责调查。一天，凯利在坠落的直升机里偶然发现螺旋桨的残损齿轮有质量问题，于是，凯利拿着那个有问题的齿轮准备报告顶头上司霍华德。 但令凯利万万没想到的是，这块残损的齿轮，其中藏有军火商和军方要员相互勾结，以劣质飞机零件进行幕后金钱交易的真相。而自己的顶头上司霍华德正是军方的主要成员。少校凯利因为知情，而招来了杀身大祸。为了保护6岁的儿子，他奋不顾身地扑倒在强尼身上，最后被暗杀者用乱枪打死。儿子强尼受了高度惊吓，从此不说一句话，整天拿着那个玩具，从不离手。 妻子芭芭拉并不知丈夫被杀的真正原因，反而把发现齿轮的问题，打电话告诉了丈夫的上司霍华德，结果正中霍华德的下怀，因此暴露了隐藏地点，以至招至来了更加凶猛的追杀。 霍华德得知少校凯利的妻子和儿子还活着，便开始了筛子般的疯狂围捕。从此，母子俩亡命天涯、无处藏身。每天都过着惊慌恐惧、东躲西藏的逃亡日子。在万般无奈的情况下，母子二人逃到了凯利过去的老战友伯恩在山里的隐居地，以求保护。 但母子俩无论躲藏到哪里，这群坏蛋总能找到他们。因为军方事前安置了一个无线电跟踪器，放在芭芭拉的车上，后来又被儿子无意识地装到了自己的玩具上，所以母子二人总是躲不过军方的跟踪。 最后，芭芭拉在丈夫战友们的帮助下，救出了儿子强尼，并和战友们一起，驾驶多架直升飞机，击毁了杀害丈夫的元凶霍华德乘坐的汽车，阴谋者最终得到了应有的下场。
